223 Great Directors: Irvin Kershner

“I like to fill up the frame with the characters’ faces. There’s nothing more interesting than the landscape of the human face.”

What Got This Director Here?
: Empire Strikes Back.

My Favorite Past Experience Was…: Empire Strikes Back, which isn’t that good.

What Did I Watch: Eyes of Laura Mars.

Where Does He Fit: Um, yeah, this is just a sillier version of giallo. The Eyes of Laura Mars’ ideas may be subsumed by style, but when Barbara Streisand is singing a ballad over the opening credits of a thriller about a woman who can see the crimes of a serial killer, I don’t even know what the fuck we’re going for. I enjoyed how insane this all was, but at the end of the day, this and Empire Strikes Back do not justify the man’s position as one of the greatest directors of all time, especially when he is beating out honest to goodness artists. (I wrote this pre-2017 update. He’s gone now. Good riddance.)

Most Valuable Asset: Uh…he follows instructions.
Most Excited For: lol no
Did They Deserve a Spot?: No.

Coming Up Next: Deadpan Finn, Aki Kaurismaki.
