210 Great Directors: David Hand

“It would be impossible for me to describe the abuse I took from Walt during that meeting. His anger developed until he at times became incoherent. I sat quietly, listened, and said nothing.”

What Got This Director Here?
: Snow White and Bambi and his part of Fantasia.

My Favorite Past Experience Was…: Snow White.

What Did I Watch: One of his shorts, The Mad Doctor.

Where Does He Fit: I’m inclined to call David Hand my favorite creator to ever work at Disney, being behind the direction of three of the company’s all-time best works in Snow White, part of Fantasia, and Bambi, along with arguably the company’s best short in Pluto’s Judgment Day. The subconscious seems to be his area of expertise (some people really like the Alice in Wonderland precursor Through the Mirror), and while The Mad Doctor is a tad too dated to really be a favorite since it’s just Mickey screaming for Pluto, the titular character is a delightful creation, with limbs like spaghetti and a lovely laugh. He deserved greater stardom.

Most Valuable Asset: Animation can be scary.
Most Excited For: Three Orphan Kittens, I guess?
Did They Deserve a Spot?: Yes.

Coming Up Next: Madman Ken Russell.
