204 Great Directors: Albert and David Maysles + Charlotte Zwerin

“The most exciting thing in life is to watch the meeting of two strangers, to see how they communicate.”

What Got This Director Here?
: Gimme Shelter and Grey Gardens in conjunction.

My Favorite Past Experience Was…: Grey Gardens.

What Did I Watch: Gimme Shelter.

Where Do They Fit: Even before the event that basically killed the 60s, Gimme Shelter is pretty great, with the brothers and Zwerin capturing the concerts with vim and verve, and the stage lighting serving the most flattering purpose possible, with alien shades of pink and red giving us full madness as they perform their sex and drugs and rock and roll songs. But then the stabbing happens, and it’s fucking horrifying thanks to some well deployed slow motion and the fact that we can see the Stones themselves watching a monitor with the footage and they don’t react, while they sort of react on the stage…with more indifference. Also, Tina Turner!

Most Valuable Asset: Real cinema is phony.
Most Excited For: Salesman.
Did They Deserve a Spot?: Yes.

Coming Up Next: Robert Mulligan, associate of Pakula but with nothing in common.
