171 Great Directors: Georges Melies

“The trick, intelligently applied, today allows us to make visible the supernatural, the imaginary, even the impossible.”

What Got This Director Here?
: Respect for the original + Trip to the Moon.

My Favorite Past Experience Was…: Trip to the Moon.

What Did I Watch: Four Troublesome Heads.

Where Does He Fit: Melies’ inclusion on this list is technically a little odd since his best film is a short that isn’t all that great, and it’s also his longest, but all his movies are delightfully charming and silly, and The Four Troublesome Heads fills that job nicely. Not much to say here, really-just go watch it on YouTube!

Most Valuable Asset: Cheekiness.
Most Excited For: Impossible Voyage.
Did They Deserve a Spot?: If only out of respect, sure.

Coming Up Next: King Hu, the…king…of martial arts movies.
