156 Great Directors: Robert Aldrich

“A director is a ringmaster, a psychiatrist and a referee.”

What Got This Director Here?
: Kiss Me Deadly and Baby Jane.

My Favorite Past Experience Was…: N/A.

What Did I Watch: What Ever Happened to Baby Jane.

Where Does He Fit: What Ever Happened to Baby Jane has been reduced to a joke thanks to Ryan Murphy turning it into a gallery for Susan Sarandon and Jessica Lange, but it’s a fitting fate, as Robert Aldrich’s most well known work practically preserves Bette Davis and Joan Crawford in amber while they still live. It’s too long, but it makes up for it by absolutely soaking us in atmosphere, and watching Davis turn into a piece of deranged, shrieking furniture is all you need. She gets all the fun, I suppose, but when the mood is so Gothic and heightened then isn’t everyone enjoying themselves, no matter how cruel they are to each other on and off screen?

Most Valuable Asset: Pulpy passions.
Most Excited For: Kiss Me Deadly.
Did They Deserve a Spot?: Seems likely.

Coming Up Next: King Kong partners Merian Cooper and Ernest Schoedsack.
