What Got This Director Here?: Chelsea Girls/Empire.
My Favorite Past Experience Was…: N/A. (I’ve sort of seen Empire?)
What Did I Watch: Chelsea Girls.
Where Does He Fit: Chelsea Girls is a crazy film where half the point is that it exists: something banal on one side, something grim on the other, and only one audio track. Where do you focus your attention? Better yet, why is the wit of the Warhol crew so strangely enjoyable even when they’re clearly slurred out of their minds? Technically, that rare DVD of the movie has killed off the “it’s always different” part of the experience that should be switched out reels, but Warhol’s punking being returned to a certain normalcy is probably the healthiest option for our sanity and for the gift of seeing this loopiness.
Most Valuable Asset: Sense of trolling.
Most Excited For: Lonesome Cowboys?
Did They Deserve a Spot?: I’d rather it was Morrissey, who directed this and made better movies to boot.
Coming Up Next: Raoul Walsh, storyteller of the wilds.
