145 Great Directors: Andrzej Wajda

“I believe one has to fight against any constraints, anywhere—everywhere the state tries to reign over the individual.”

What Got This Director Here?
: Ashes and Diamonds.

My Favorite Past Experience Was…: N/A

What Did I Watch: Ashes and Diamonds.

Where Does He Fit: Ashes and Diamonds was a surprise: I’d seen some stills, and I expected something more fantastical. What I got instead was a long dark night of the soul type film, with more cheerfulness than that implies in the early going and a real sense of surprise when that weird needled statue that’s hanging upside down shows up. The war has just ended, but there’s still little fires burning and the music is gloomy. That’s what happens when you kill people unjustly, in a metaphor that grows slipperier the harder you think about it. Adjusting to a new world is hard, so enjoy the fireworks to celebrate a transition.
