141 Great Directors: Elem Klimov

“I’ve lost interest in making films. Everything that was possible I felt I had already done.”

What Got This Director Here?
: Come and See.

My Favorite Past Experience Was…: N/A.

What Did I Watch: Welcome or No Trespassing.

Where Does He Fit: What happens when you decide that watching Come and See is not how you want to spend your day? You watch a film that definitely had an influence on Moonrise Kingdom instead! (The shot composition and sense of humor is uncanny at points, especially since this is in black and white.) Klimov was clearly a very talented individual whose issues with children could have gone into some really fascinating places, as this is as light as a feather while I’ve heard the stories about what is to come down the pipe at some point. But this is adorable and perfect viewing for children of all ages, with quirky jokes that are legitimately funny because they are rooted in the form.
