114 Great Directors: Jean-Marie Straub and Daniele Huillet

“It is the dividing lines that make one’s public. And the dividing lines end up in one way or another being lines which correspond to the lines of class, and class struggle.”

What Got These Directors Here?
: Body of work.

My Favorite Past Experience Was…: N/A

What Did I Watch: From the Clouds to the Resistance

Where Do They Fit: From the Clouds to the Resistance is my first encounter with these two, and I am not confident in anything about my reaction to it. It is aggressively weird, filmed theater about man’s relationship with the gods that makes a major time jump at one point and sticks to various vignettes of people just saying things. As an avid fan of Greek mythology, it was hard to resist all the weird little allusions, and the declamatory style is certainly something that hypnotizes, but did I really like it or am I just forcing myself to seem smart? Even I don’t know.

Most Valuable Asset: Brechtian dialogue and framing.
Most Excited For: Sicilia!
Did They Deserve a Spot?: Undecided, leaning yes.

Coming Up Next: The ultimate hipster, Jim Jarmusch.
