107 Great Directors: Jean Eustache

“I decided to break with the films that I was making because they were suffocating me.”

What Got This Director Here?
: Mother and the Whore.

My Favorite Past Experience Was…: N/A

What Did I Watch: Mother and the Whore.

Where Does He Fit: I cannot claim The Mother and the Whore is an easy watch, as it essentially traps you with three of the most unbearable characters in history for three and a half hours. And yet the length serves a purpose in fully trapping you in the worlds of these characters, like amber. Jean-Pierre Leaud gets to have the most fun, of course, but watching this threesome monologue at one another for a very long time slowly approaches transcendence if you let it, with sudden events changing things very quickly after a long period of slowness. That is how life is. It sucks.

Most Valuable Asset: Time and talk.
Most Excited For: My Little Loves.
Did They Deserve a Spot?: Seems very likely.

Coming Up Next: Spike Lee, the foremost African American auteur.
