108 Great Directors: Claire Denis

“Life is made of the only thing you can decide, the rest you can not: to commit suicide or to kill someone. The rest, happens.”

What Got This Director Here?
: Body of work, mostly Beau Travail.

My Favorite Past Experience Was…: Only saw Bastards, which is…a tricky intro.

What Did I Watch: White Material.

Where Does She Fit: White Material is absolutely mad, a series of gorgeous vistas with Isabelle Huppert wandering around and refusing to cut bait even when it becomes blatantly obvious very quickly that she will be totally fucked if she does not. This could be flat, but it’s not thanks to one of the greatest actresses in the world and a cast-iron sense of how to make the world seem dreamlike and mad. It is reportedly one of the toughest films of a difficult filmmaker, but I found it remarkably easy to get on its wavelength, a scary mood piece that sticks and flows.

Most Valuable Asset: Editing.
Most Excited For: Beau Travail.
Did They Deserve a Spot?: Seems likely.

Coming Up Next: Jean Eustache, minor-major member of the French New Wave.
