103 Great Directors: Clint Eastwood

“You know when you think of a particular director, you think you would have liked to be with them on one particular film and not necessarily on some other one.”

What Got This Director Here?
: Body of work, mostly Unforgiven.

My Favorite Past Experience Was…: Unforgiven.

What Did I Watch: An overdue Million Dollar Baby rewatch.

Where Does He Fit: Million Dollar Baby thankfully holds up, a crowdpleaser with something spikier in its veins, with a desaturated palette that thankfully looks better than all the gray shit Christopher Nolan has served up, with pine forest greens instead. It’s about scrappiness and skill, one of the rare great boxing movies that also turns into a mostly great treatise on class (shame that Margo Martindale’s role as Swank’s mother is kind of awful). The distance, as it turns out, is healthy: where Scorsese stuck us in a fiery viewpoint, here everything is a bit colder and more worn out. Glad this still works.

Most Valuable Asset: Old school aesthetics.
Most Excited For: Bridges of Madison County.
Did They Deserve a Spot?: Yes.

Coming Up Next: Brian De Palma’s crazy camera.
