86 Great Directors: Theo Angelopoulos

“Greek people have grown up caressing dead stones. I’ve tried to bring mythology down from the heights and directly to the people.”

What Got This Director Here?
: Mostly Travelling Players.

My Favorite Past Experience Was…: N/A.

What Did I Watch: The Travelling Players.

Where Does He Fit: I wish more movies like The Traveling Players existed, and I wish the ones that did exist would get proper Blu-Ray releases (the United States currently cannot even get this on DVD). The delectably long takes are heaven, and the themes are catnip: a group of actors performing their way through all of Greek history. As someone who wrote a play that took the same idea onto a much smaller scale, I could not help but feel jealous that someone could do this so masterfully. It’s an expression of passion in more ways than one, and I hope to see this on a big screen someday so I can appreciate the little things and the big, bad takes.

Most Valuable Asset: Camera takes.
Most Excited For: Landscape in the Mist.
Did They Deserve a Spot?: Yes.

Coming Up Next: Cinema’s foremost woman director, Chantal Akerman.
