84 Great Directors: David Cronenberg

” My dentist said to me the other day: I’ve enough problems in my life, so why should I see your films?”

What Got This Director Here?
: Body of work.

My Favorite Past Experience Was…: History of Violence.

What Did I Watch: Dead Ringers.

Where Does He Fit: If you were as beautiful and had as much power in the medical world of the time as Jeremy Irons’ gynecologist(s), wouldn’t you be willing to separate yourself into two different selves, each capable of dominating their industry in such a way that made them an unbeatable team? The body is many things in Cronenberg’s masterpiece, but mostly, it is something horrible if you are a woman and something beautiful if it’s yours in the eyes of both Elliott and Beverly, who both take out their feelings over their perfect little ecosystem being disrupted in many horrifying ways. Unimpeachable stuff. (Wrote more about this in a paper.)

Most Valuable Asset: Ideas about physicality.
Most Excited For: Videodrome.
Did They Deserve a Spot?: Yes.

Coming Up Next: Gillo Pontecorvo, most known for his hackwork.
