75 Great Directors: Erich von Stroheim

“My Vienna is as different from what they call Vienna now as the quick is from the dead.”

What Got This Director Here?
: Greed.

My Favorite Past Experience Was…: Greed.

What Did I Watch: Blind Husbands.

Where Does He Fit: Blind Husbands is a very impressive debut indeed. Despite Von Stroheim’s legendary tendencies when it came towards adaptations of books, this is a case of someone getting a shitload of money to make a village look real and with emotional dynamics and mise en scene that feel straight out of the end of the silent era. The tale is a bit simpler than Greed and Foolish Wives, mostly because the title cards don’t fuck around, but everything is appropriately stagy and looks like it hasn’t seen a single frame get slashed to pieces by the inevitable censoring of the work.

Most Valuable Asset: Epic scale.
Most Excited For: The Merry Widow.
Did They Deserve a Spot?: Yes, but too high.

Coming Up Next: Craftsman Leo McCarey.
