59 Great Directors: Pier Paolo Pasolini

“The mark which has dominated all my work is the longing for life, this sense of exclusion, which doesn’t lessen, but augments this love of life.”

What Got This Director Here?
: Mostly Gospel According to St. Matthew and Salo.

My Favorite Past Experience Was…: N/A.

What Did I Watch: Gospel According to St. Matthew.

Where Does He Fit: The Gospel According to St. Matthew is the only religious movie for which the appropriate reactions are both “That is a beautiful ode to religion” and “That is why religion is a fucking joke.” As an atheist, this gave me a deeper understanding that I didn’t know I needed, a glimpse into a weirdly dubbed world where life is austere until a miracle just…happens. It’s realism, in its own demented way, a tonic to the fairy tales that are so often pushed and aggressively political and revolutionary in its aims. Proof that anything can be adapted into something that dissects if you look at its core hard enough.

Most Valuable Asset: Austerity and political awareness.
Most Excited For: Teorema.
Did They Deserve a Spot?: Yes.

Coming Up Next: Comedian Jacques Tati.
