58 Great Directors: Jacques Tati

“I find that the people who speak the worst English want to talk more than the others.”

What Got This Director Here?
: Playtime.

My Favorite Past Experience Was…: His frankly irritating short Fun Sunday.

What Did I Watch: School for Postmen.

Where Does He Fit: School for Postmen, Tati’s little precursor to his features, is an amusing enough work, mostly notable for the high pitched voice at the start that turned out to be my favorite gag. It doesn’t really have a climax, but that’s okay, it’s a comedy short, and his talent is clearly developing. (It’s also his only good short, as I didn’t like Forza Bastia either. Wish me luck on the features!)

Most Valuable Asset: Chaplin’s influences.
Most Excited For: Playtime.
Did They Deserve a Spot?: TBD.
