53 Great Directors: John Huston

“I’ve lived a number of lives. I’m inclined to envy the man who leads one life, with one job, and one wife, in one country, under one God. It may not be a very exciting existence, but at least by the time he’s seventy-three he knows how old he is.”

What Got This Director Here?
: Mostly Maltese Falcon.

My Favorite Past Experience Was…: Maltese Falcon.

What Did I Watch: Fat City.

Where Does He Fit: Fat City is such a sad, grim movie even though it never loses hope. It looks smelly, something that Rocky never accomplished, yet it also glows. Huston’s skill with actors in the studio system has become increasingly natural here, with a truly fantastic ensemble making their way through a crappy little town and trying to keep afloat. One is rising to the top, the other is sinking down, and Susan Tyrrell is the beating heart that hurts too much when Stacy Keach is struggling to get by in his middle age. Glorious, Hall of Fame level stuff. Maybe even better than Raging Bull?

Most Valuable Asset: Hardboiled fun.
Most Excited For: Treasure of the Sierra Madre.
Did They Deserve a Spot?: Yes.

Coming Up Next: Deadpan Buster Keaton.
